This post contains spoilers for The Originals Season 1 Episode 16. Venture forth at your own risk.

In 1947, Arthur Lubin directed a nostalgic musical drama titled New Orleans, which starred the beautiful Billie Holiday as a maid who moonlights as a nightclub singer and the extraordinary Louis Armstrong as a bandleader. Although the stilted dialogue and romance fall on the rather conventional side, this cinematic work not only captures the significant cultural imperialism and racial injustices of the time, but it’s also essentially a love letter to the great legends of jazz, the ascent of ragtime music, and the lively, colorful city of NOLA.

One scene in particular, understated yet powerful, continues to resonate with us. Billie — in all her vocal prowess — performs a song called “Farewell to Storyville.” “Pick out your steamboat, pick yourself a train, a slow train / They made you close up, they’ll never let you back, won’t let you back / Go buy your ticket or else you’ll walk the track,” she croons. Personally, whenever we hear it, we’re overwhelmed with a sense of melancholy. You see, this musical number marks one of the most intimate moments in the movie: namely, when all the local artists, musicians, and prostitutes are forced to leave the red light district of New Orleans and their homes behind. While Billie’s voice softly reverberates with sadness as she sings about finding “blue skies” after “the cold, old rain,” Louis distills his despair into each toot that blasts from his horn.

That said, considering how “Farewell to Storyville” also happens to be the name of The Originals Season 1 Episode 16, we’re pretty worried; we don’t take OG titles lightly since they usually hold some thematic relevance. Moreover, seeing as how the temporarily defeated Mikaelson family members are trapped in the City of the Dead (the local graveyard), things aren’t looking bright for them. Dive into the CW’s official synopsis below for more details on all the gripping drama!

Despite Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) rage, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) is determined to protect Rebekah (Claire Holt) while the three of them are trapped in the City of the Dead cemetery by a witch’s boundary spell. Klaus and Rebekah trade bitter accusations until Elijah steps in to reveal a long-held secret from the family’s past.  Meanwhile, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) races to free Rebekah, ultimately finding himself forced to make a deal with Genevieve (guest star Elyse Levesque). Finally, Rebekah and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) connect over their shared concern for Hayley’s unborn baby. Jesse Warn directed the episode written by Michael Narducci (#116).

It pains our hearts to hear that the Mikaelson siblings are once again at odds with one another and we hope that they are able to overcome their latest obstacle. Additionally, we’re curious to learn more about this family secret Elijah’s been harboring for centuries. What do you reckon it is? Post your predictions in the comments and be sure to tune in to catch all the action!
